Women s track wins West Point Outdoor OpenPublished by
WEST POINT, N.Y.—Freshman Keishorea Armstrong and junior Ivory Taussig each won an event and ran on the first-place 4x100 relay team, highlighting Binghamton s performance at the West Point Outdoor Track Open. The Bearcat women won the six-team meet while the men were third behind the host Black Knights and Manhattan. Taussig won the 100 (12.19) while Armstrong took top honors in the 200 (24.24). They then joined junior Alexx Baum and senior Kathleen Klein to break the school record in the 4x100 relay with a time of 46.58. The old mark of 46.84 was set back in 2007. Also winning on the women s side was sophomore Nina Sarmiento in the 400 hurdles (1:03.41), freshman Sarah Osaheni in the triple jump (38-6) and sophomore Tori Shaffer in the high jump (5-5 3/4). On the men s side, freshman Jon Alkins won the 100 (11.00), sophomore Joe Miceli captured the pole vault (16-7) and fellow sophomore Brandon Bordeau won the discus (156-10). All of them met the IC4A qualifying standard in their events. Other men’s winners were sophomore Jon King in the high jump (6-4 3/4) and junior Pat Heikklia in the shot put (51-2 3/4). Graduate student Jacob Platel was third in the hammer and broke the school record with a distance of 189-6. The old mark of 189-2 was set by Paddy Hennessy in 2006. NOTE: The distance runners for Binghamton are currently competing in the two-day Bucknell Outdoor Invitational. Fifth-year senior Vasili Papastrat was second overall in the 5,000, with an IC4A-qualifying time of 14:26. Alexis Hatcher was the top women’s finisher on Saturday, placing fifth in the women s 3,000 SC. Her time of 10:49.75 met the ECAC qualifying standard.
