Track and field squads compete at Southern Tier Collegiate OpenPublished by

Freshman Jon Alkins won the men s 60 and ran on the first-place 4x400 relay team, highlighting the Binghamton track & field teams performances at the Southern Tier Collegiate Open late Friday night at Cornell. There was no team scoring at the meet. Alkins clocked a winning time of 6.95 in the 60. That breaks the school record of 6.97, set by Devinn Askew in 2011. Alkins then joined graduate student Zach Keefer and sophomores Max Linden and Temi Bajulaiye to record a winning time of 3:23.07 in the 4x400 relay. Both times met the IC4A qualifying standard. Also winning on the men s side was sophomore Ethan Hausamann in the mile (4:21.95). There were also three first-place finishes on the women s side. Sophomore Nina Sarmiento won the 500 (1:22.04), sophomore Tori Shaffer took top honors in the high jump (5-6) and sophomore Kenyon Merriwether captured the weight throw (55-2). Shafer’s height met the ECAC qualifying standard. Up next for Binghamton is the Albany Great Dane Classic on Jan. 17.
